Walls as Site
In this workshop, students are encouraged to go inwards and locate a symbol that they feel represents them. Through sketching and redrawing and exploring this symbol they then reduce it to the essence of its meaning rather than any recognisable or traditional symbol. This resulting image is drawn onto acetate and then cut out forming a stencil.
These stencils show students' personal symbols that were then used to explore spray painting techniques as well as collaboration with other artist-student-teachers.
The workshop allows exploration of spray painting upon gessoed boards in lieu of walls, which activity can then be expanded into a development of concepts and practices that involve street art.
The concept of exploring the self through a closely manipulated image can pave the way for an advanced development of a personal aesthetic. The collaborative aspect engenders an improved work ethic, mutual respect and unexpected results.
